What are the Corpus Christi celebrations?

Experience a unique display of Tenerife's culture on the 23rd of June, 2022 in La Orotava! The Corpus Christi religious celebrations take place each year on a day between May and June on the streets of La Orotava, a beautiful and picturesque town in the North of Tenerife with a rich, aristocratic history. The preparations for these celebrations last for more than a month, during which the local artisans prepare magnificent art installations, or “flower carpets”, which cover the streets of La Orotava. The town’s decorated streets lead you to a large installation created with different coloured volcanic sands and flowers, covering the entirety of the town hall square, each year displaying a unique design, which will disappear during the celebrations, as pilgrims will eventually sweep it away with their feet...

The tradition of creating such “carpets” was led by doña Leonor del Castillo en 1847, when she first created a carpet of flowers on the pavement of the street in front of her home in honor of the Corpus Christi celebrations. The first carpet was a simple geometric drawing in a baroque style made from the petals of flowers. This kind of display surprised and created admiration in the locals and the practice quickly became trendy among other aristocrats. Currently these celebrations are held each year with the installations covering more than 1200 m2 of streets with a total of 34 flower carpets. In 2007 the main square carpet entered book of the Guinness World Records for being the largest natural sand painting in the world with 859,42 m2.

At around 8:30 am we’ll pick you up at your hotel and by around 10:30 am we’ll reach La Orotava to experience the festivities. After the festivities are over, we’ll head back to your hotel - we’ll be back by around 2 pm, so you’ll still have plenty of time to enjoy the beach or other other activities during the day!
